OCEAN RACE. An interesting ocean race from Auckland to London between the Tyser liner Marere and the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Matatua was com- < pleted on the afternoon of July 26. The Matatua cleared the railway wharf at 1 p.m. on that day, and was followed three hours later by the Marere. At daylight next morning the Marere sighted the Matatua, and kept her in sight ior three days. The Matatua then gradually forged ahead of her rival, the Marere taking a more southerly course. Passing the Falkland Islands at 8 a.m. on August 13 the Marere's- officers sighted the Matatua, and the vessels were in sight of each other round Cape Horn, but again separated. The Marere cut out the distance from Auckland to Cape Horn in 17 days 7 hours, and met with extremely stormy weather, a succession of southerly gales being encountered, , lasting several days, during which she had to run well to the north, thereby losing considerable time. Several large } icebergs were passed after the ship had been a week out from Auckland. The Marere called at Las Palmas to coal, staying there 24 hours, while the Matatua coaled at Teneriffe in five hours. During the latter stages of the voyage the Marere apepars to have outstripped her rival, as she passed Dover light at 955 p.m. an September 7, the Matatua passing several hours later. The Marere's actual steaming time from Auckland to London was 44 days 51 hours 52 minutes.
