SPORTING

STRATFORD RACES,

SECOND DAY. The Stratford Racing Club's annual meeting was concluded yesterday in showry weather. Despite the inclement weather the course was in fair order and the racing of an interesting character. The big race fell to an outsider in the shape of Minora, who just beat Te Roti after a fine set-to. The sensation of the day was the defeat of St. Bill in the Ngaere Handicap. This winner, Red Lupin, carries the colors of Mr. Sid. Pitt, a popular member of the Stratford Club, and the pony was only started to make a decent race of it, St. Bill and Overtime being the only others to go to the post. St. Gate and Ngatiruanui repeated their first day's successes. The small field in the Ngaere Handicap detracted from the totalisator turnover, but the total for the day was £B4ll, as against £7210 for the second day last year. The total for this year was £18,525; last year, £14,625 10s. The meeting was admirably conducted throughout, and the starting was, on the whole, first class, considering the number of fractious horses which faced the barrier. After the first race the horses Monsieur Soult and St. Prior were offered for sale, but failed to reach their reserves and were passed in. Following are details of the racing:— COUNTY HACK, of 70 sovs; second horse five sovs from the stakes. Six furlongs. A. Hall's b g St. Gate, syrs (St. Clements—Billinsgate mare), 8.3 i(W. Price) . C. Ander's br m Avaunce, 4yrs, 8.2 (Ayers) i Hikaka's blk c St. Laup, 4yrs, 7.9 (Carmont) 3

Also started: Muleteer (Olliver) 8.8, Mortite (Kemp) S.O, Kiwitihi (McCarter) 0.12. Avaunce and St. Gate were the smartest to get going from an even start, Kiwitihi moving off slowly. After a furlong St: Gate was bowling along a couple of lengths in front of Mortite, Avaunce, St. Laup and Muleteer, following closely. Mortite ran up to St. Gate at the, halfmile, but the amber and black hoops showed slightly in front of the green along the top. Mortite cried enough at the home turn, and St. Gate raced for home followed by Avaunce, Mortite and St. Laup. Avaunce and St. Laup came with a rattle over the last bit, but nothing had a chance with St. Gate, who won comfortably by a length and a half from Avaunce. St. Laup was half a length away, third, Mortiti l fourth, Muleteer coming fast next, and Kiwitihi last. St. Laup was a warm favorite, and Avaunce was next best backed. Time, lmin. 18 2-s&ec.

Red Lupin ran up to second place at the half mile, but failed to sustain the effort. Minora came up to Te Roti's quarter going along the top, and the pair were in line at the distance. The pace was very slow, and Brilliancy had to be shaken up to raise a gallop. Ambergris ran in behind Brilliancy at the stand, and headed the leader five furlongs from home. Allure running third and Darby Paul next. Across the top Darby Paul closed on Ambergris, and Clemency made up some headway. Darby Paul and Ambergris turned for home together, but Ambergris made the best jump at the last fence. At the distance Darby Paul came again, and drawing away in the run home scored by a length.
