CHEAPER CABLES.
AUSTRALIAN DEMANDS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, January 2. The Postmaster-General states that unless further concessions than the reduced rates for deferred cables are speedily forthcoming the Government will press for a subsidiary conference to consider the question of the nationalisation of the Atlantic cable. The Pacific Cable Board informed the Commonwealth Government that the new Australia-New. Zealand cable would cost £155,000. The total value of the New Zealand cable traffic is £30,000 yearly. Of this the Board, working one cable, has been handling £20,000. By reductions of staff and ether economies* the new cable will save £OOOO per annum. It will be laid this year.
