NORTH v. SOUTH TARANAKI. EXCITING PLAY. NORTH TARANAKI 316 FOR SEVEN WICKETS. MATTHEWS HIT FIVE SIXES OFF ONE OVER. The North v. South Taxanaki match was commenced in the Recreation Grounds at 1.4S yesterday afternoon in good weather, but with a poor attendance. The Southerners were a mail short, and Maclcay filled the vacancy. Pratt and Dunlop went .to the wickets for the Southerners, facing the trundling of Blundell and Gudgeon. The former opened with a four off Blundell. Runs came freely, and Blundell had 13 scored off him by Pratt in two overs. Dunlop got a single, a two, and a couple of fours in quick succession, and soon 30 was shown on the board. Gudgeon, hawover, with the last ball of an over, took Pratt's wicket. 35—1—21. Pratt hit four fourers. Cole joined Dunlop, but not for long, and after hitting a single sJidi a four was caught by Bain, of Gwillim's bowling. 40 —3—5. Mitchell joined Boyes, and started with a couple. of two's. Arden made a good attempt to catch Boyes. Immediately after Dinniss dropped an easy catch from Mitchell, both being from Bain's bowling. Boyes was then bowled' by Blundell. 178— 7 —6. Hartley joined Mitchell, and started with a single. Mitchell then lost his wicket to Bain. 180—8 —8. At 3.30 the Northerners, went in, Perham and Bain batting against Cole and Boy€ 6. The first ten runs were made in | twelve minutes, of which PeTham scored I eight. Resuming at 4.20, Rain knocked Pratt j about, getting three fours in succession. Gwillim joined Weston, and made the play interesting, scoring twelve in two minutes—a four, a two, and a six. He followed with a six, and Weston then got a four, 'bringing 160 up. Pratt was put on bowling, and Gwillim hit him for six, repeating it immediately after. Tins j player gave a chance, which was missed by Walker. Then 200 went up. The light at this stage was getting bad. Weston only scored one six and a foiur, but had played a good innings for 40 when he was bowled by Boyes. 200—4 40. Matthews joined Gwillim and opened with two fours in succession. Then he put a ball from Boyes on to the fourth terrace for six, and gave Mackay a chance of a catch, which was missed. Being set, he stood at his wickets and gave the spectators a treat. He took an over from Boyes, and landed five balls out of the six on-to the terraces, scoring 30 in five hits, which performance was greeted with applause. His score soon reached 50, and 200 came up. Walker was put on to bowl, and Gwillim hit him away for six. Matthews then got one on to the terrace and followed with a four. The board showed 300, and after a few more runs had been added Matthews was caught by Walker, off Dunlop. He was in 40 minutes and scored 73, including eight sixers. 300—5—73. Blundell was next man in, and after scoring a single, was bowled by Dunlop. 309 —o—l. Ingram joined Gwillim, and after the latter had a hit for four, the last man in was caught and bowled by Dunlop for none. 316—7—0. Stumps were thin drawn, with Gwillim pot out for 91.
