PEOPLING AUSTRALIA.
GIVING GERMANY HALF OF THE
COUNTRY,
A PROPOSAL CONDEMNED.
Ry Cable —Press Association—Copyright.
London, December 30.
The Spectator of December 23 contained an article in v which German Expansion was discussed, and the unreasonableness was shown of conceding any British territory, on the ground that a'll is in effective occupation to-day. 'I Professor Caldecott, of King's Co]* lege, traverses the article, and isfcgj *Gan we honestly say that lour and a-half millions population is effective occupation of Australia, or are we able to keep Japan and China out? Would not a 'white Australia' be more stable if the British have the eastern half and the Germans the western? Are a quarter of a million Westralians equitably entitled to prevent a great nation from taking its place under the Southern Cross? The unoccupied part of Australia is a serious cause of instability when viewing the influence of Europe upon the world in a large way. To-day's Spectator denounces these opinions as illustrations of the extraordinary lengths well-meaning but mud-dle-headed people will go to put their country in the wrong, but it would be difficult to find words to repel the amazing suggestion that England should hand over a continent which has been British for over a century. Australia would fight to a man to repel the admission of foreigners. Australia would lx» right. For the Mother Country in wanton ecstacy or philanthropic sentimentality to introduce a military race like the Germans would make a bloody struggle for *upermacy a certainty.
The Rev. Alfred Caldecott. D.D.. D. lit., is Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy at King's College, London. Among his publications is ona on "English Colonisation and Empire," which was translated into Japanese in 1009.
