The Daily News. TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1912. AN EFFICIENT OFFICER.
New Plymouth is losing the services of Senior-Sergeant Dart, one of the brightest men in the New Zealand police force. The Sergeant is a curiosity in his way, for his gifts entitle him to strive for a higher place in life. The reason why he is in the police service is because he lores it, and during his service he has shown a diligence and application highly commendable. "The intelligent policeman" is sometimes used in derision lij people less intelligent than the average constable, and the fact that a highly educated man may enter the police service out of jure love for its many highly interesting duties is 'an evidence that the service has something to offer in Teturn for intelligence and Senior-Sergeant Dart was educate^'at Christ's Hospital, the famous .--English "Bluecoaf school, and oho oi'the finest in the Empire. He a/ notable athlete as well as.a fine,(student. He has carried these predilections with him through his police 'career, for he is an authority on sporting matters as Well u being an exponent. His education was of great serace to the Department, and while during the years he was guide, philosopher/friend and instructor to all the probationers who passed out of the Mount .Cook depot, although he was little before the. public, he performed invaluable public services. He passed his solicitor's examination, and shares with Inspector J. O'Dono'van the distinction of being one of the two New Zealand police officers who have done so. The SeniorSergeant has the reputation of utterly fearless discharge of dutifea. a knowledge of police laws and procedure second to none in New Zealand, and impartiality in dealing with men who are for the time being under his command. In Court he is only the prosecutor, as distinct from the persecutor. We believe and hope that Senior-Sergeant Dart's ability, taet and application will help him still higher in the service which has been so faithfully served by him, and he will leave New Plymouth with the best wishes of all who have come in contact with him during his all too brief •stay here.
