THE HOLIDAYS
On Monday next holiday-makers will celebrate one of the most important (Hays of the year, and according to their desires for- pleasure will wend their ways in many directions. STRATFORD RACES. For the man who gets enjoyment out of horse-racing the Stratford meeting will afford scope for speculation and excitement. The acceptances are good, and train arrangements such as will make it convenient for patrons to attend. j THE SEASIDE ■, will undoubtedly attract not onlv town people, but those from the country, as the latter have few opportunities during the year of participating in the exhilarating effect of the sea air. Arrangements hare been made for a hjg seaside picnic at the Breakwater, for which there will be a special train service. This outing will be a great opportunity for families gathering on the beach, and the committee who aro interesting themselves for the comfort of the public have made arrangements for a gratuitous supply of hot water, sugar and milk. The kiddies are guaranteed a good time, as there will be races galore for them. What will add considerably to the enjoyment of the day will be selections from the Garrison Band.
RAHOTU AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL. This provides a nice outing with a day in the country. A pleasant drive or motor trip down the coast will take one to the well known coastal township of Eahotu, which will be found in gala trim, the occasion being the annual sports gathering, which caters for a large district. This year running events have been cut out and the prizes for the chopping and sawing events have been increased. This has been appreciated by competitors, who have nominated freely. There will be found competing many of the winners' in the axemen's events at Eltham, viz., McCauley, Shewrey, Johnson, Pretty, Richardson, O'Rourke and numerous others, who will be pitted against the best of the local lads. The cycling events have drawn moderate fields, but all are triers. The secretary has arranged for a fine day, which is all that is required to ensure success. CRICKET. i Admirers of wielders of the willow may witness a representative match in the Recreation Grounds, when North and South Taranaki representatives will try conclusions, play commencing on Monday at one o'clock. CALEDONIAN SPORTS AT HAWERA. {The twenty-second annual gathering will ta'kc place at Hawera. These sport? have a reputation which stimulates all Scotchmen, and the Taranaki Pipe Band being engaged for the occasion a big attendance may be expected. The lengthy programme of events is always got through expeditiously, and good sport is always seen there. Good train arrangements are advertised. PICTURES. The place to go in the evening is the Empire Theatre, where the pictures arc all the rage. The programme to be produced on Monday night includes the great society drama, "The Price of Beauty," in addition to a number of star items.
