FROM THE AUSTRALIAN PAPERS. JOHNSON'S FUTURE. Jack Johnson, it is reported, is sailing for Chicago. His wife is ill ,and his movements are uncertain. It is said that he intends to open a cafe in Chicago and retire from the ring for good. NEGRO PREACHER HANGED. A negro preacher was hanged on the stage of a theatre in Jackson, Georgia, in the presence of a large audience, for inciting his brethren to engage in a race riot. LONG BALLOON JOURNEY. Jules Dubois, when competing in the aerial race for the cup, presented by the municipality of Paris, covered 000 miles in a balloon. He started at La Mottc, Breuil, and landed at Slomin, in Western Russia, on the following day. A LACERATED BRAIN. A man shot himself in the head with a revolver at Los Angeles, the bullet lacerating and tearing away much of the brain issue. He lay in that condition for 17 hours before he was discovered. A surgical operation has been performed on the victim, and there appears to be every reason to hope for his recovery. It is considered to be a remarkable case, and the medical profession are watching it with interest. AMERICAN MEAT. The British Government has cancelled tho army contracts which it held with \ the Chicago meat packers on account of the disclosures made at the meat trust trial in Chicago. Mr. J. 0. Armour, the wealthy packer, says that the loss of these contracts will mean the forfeiture of millions of pounds yearly to the American packers. The Argentine, he says, will secure the orders from Great Britain. Mr. Armour blames the Labor members in the House of Commons for bringing about the cancellation. Flour and tea, however, are a little cheaper than formerly. WOMEN IN WAR. i The. Introduction of conscription among women was advanced by Dr. Wilzel, of the Medical Academy, in the course of a lecture before the Patriotic Women's Union in Dusseldorf. The lecturer' suggested that women should be enrolled in the military hospitals, transporting, provisioning and clothing services, and that they should be mobilised with other auxiliaries in time of war. The suffragettes have taken up the proposal with great enthusiasm. MONSTER RAILWAY STATION. Chicago merchants aud railway officials arc planning the construction of a monster station for the accommodation of all trains running into the city. The cost of the scheme is estimated at between ,i 15,000,000 and £30,000,000.
