XEW ZEALAND LIGHTHOUSES. • It is claimed that the New Zealand! coast is as well lighted as many of the ; older and much more frequented coasts of the old lands. On the oilier hand, frequent agitation is made by representatives of the masters and officers engaged in these waters for the extension of the system. The total cost of maintenance of the lighthouses for last year was £11.200 for salaries, oil and stores £6496, contingent expenses £219. Besides this i must be reckoned the cost of maintaining the steamer Hinemoa, which periodically visits and replenishes stores on the outlying places. The. total revenue derived from light due paid by shipping for the same year was £36,749.

The Tokomaru, which is due in Wellington, via Australian ports, on Thursday next, was a full ship when she left the Canadian port. Since the inauguration of the service the trade has continued to expand, and the prospects are now of the brightest. Captain Holm has purchased the steamer John, 342 tons, classed 100 Al at Lloyd's/ The John is en route from Home to Bunbury, she she is to load jarrah timber for Gcclong. On completion of discharge. the John comes on to New Zealand.
