CRICKET
ItKPRESENTATLVE MATCH. TARANAKI v. VVANGA2JUI. The above match was commenced ill the Recreation Grounds yesterday morning. Although the weather had been most unpropitious for .some days, it was fine when play commenced, and the afternoon brought perfect weather. They played on matting, but owing to the rain the grass had not received the attention which the local committee desired, and that, coupled witli the dampness of the ground, impeded the progress of the ball, and many hits which would, under better conditions, have gone to the boundary, stopped before reaching it. As is customary with matches at holiday time, there were a number of the picked men absent, the visitors having seven substitutes, and the local men several. Taranaki went to the wickets, Perham and Bain facing the bowling of Holland and Luxford. The first good hit was by Perham for three, followed by four by Bain. With 20 on the board, Murchie was put on to bowl. Runs were being made freely, when Murchie's fifth over proved fatal to Bain, who was taken with a fast ball. The first wicket produced 41 runs, the latter socring 25. Ilasell joined Perham, but was taken by Murchie's first ball. 2 —41—0. Murchie had then taken two wickets for seven. Gudgeon went to the wickets, but was soon out l.b.w. for 2. 3—55—2. Nicoll followed, but Baker, who had only bowled one over and taken a wicket, got him out for nothing. 4—55 —0. Gwillim joined Perham, and opened with a hit for two, followed by a three. An adjournment was made for lunch at 12.45., after an hour and ten minutes' •play, Perham then having scored 28 .by careful cricket.
On resuming at two oclock, Baker took Perham's wicket in his second over, having taken three wickets for five runs. 6—(X)—2B, Eggleston joined Gwillim, and scored four for a hit near the terraces. Baker again got on to the wicket, taking Gwillim from the off. 6—79 —12. Wilson followed, but was given out l.b.w. to Baker without scoring. 7 —79 —0. Arden went in, but was disposed of with the first ball, being run out after calling. 8—79—0. Matthews joined Eggleston, and after getting a single and a two was taken by Baker. 9—B2r—3. Blundell had a short reign, as Baker got his wicket the first ball sent down, having taken seven wickets for 11. 10—84—0. The first wicket fell for 41,' and the score was only a little more than doubled for the remaining nine wickets.
Sanders and Holland opened for the visitors against the bowling of Gudgeon and Blundell. The wickets soon began to fall, Holland toeing bowled by Gudgeon for 4. I—4—4. Murchie followed, and after getting a single and a four Blundell sent along a ball to Sanders which sent his bails Sying. 2—22—5. Orton joined Murchie, and they gave the ibowlers some work. Their combined score totalled 107, and six trundkrs had a try to break up the partnership. When the total was at 67, of which the partnership had made 50, the latter wa« 'bowled by Gudgeon, 3—<s7 —35.. Lux-j ford followed, but, was caught by Gwil-i lim without scoring. 4 —68 —0. Tracy i joined Orton at the tea adjournment at 4 o'clock, >nd on resuming iwa» caught by Matthews. s—B5 —89 —11. Furrie | then joined Orton, and they added considerably to the score. Orton hit high and was caught by Arden, after a splendid innings. 6—153—72. Baker w?nt in, and; soon after Furrie, who had' shown clever cricket, was run out. 7—163 —32. Oallan was next in, and after getting a sixer was run out. 8—177—9, Allen joined Baker, but was soon disposed of far nothing. 9—177 —0. Roud followed, and was taken by Blundell for one. 10—179—1.
laianaKi commenced their second innings at. 5.45, and at 0.30 had lost six I wickets fqr 23. Eggleston and. Nicol'l were first in, facing the bowling of Holland and Baker. Wickets fell more rapidly than was expected. Three were caught, one bowled, and two w-ent out l.b.w. Perham and Hasell were in when stumps were drawn, The following are the scores:—
