Tn the Supreme Court at TTobart, Mr Bond. M.L.C.. proceeded against the TTobart Mercury, claiming £ 50(10 damages for alleged libel contained in a, paragraph which appcaed in the Mercury of August .">. headed "Passing Notes on Things in j Ociicral.'' as follows:- -"It is very amusing to watch the efforts of some men to win the favor of working men by a little cheap advertisement, while getting always some solid advantage for themselves. One well-known fTohart business man was in the domain last Sunday afternoon when the collection was being made lo pay the lines of the men who had been pro-eculed for ,breaches of the Masters and Sen an Is Act. With some ostentation. be threw a sovereign into 1 he ring saying, iln on, boys; you've a good cause. Stick to it." A few days afterwards a working man siuck him up on the wharf. It is very easy for such a man to be generous to the exleiit ol a sovereign. J think lie might have made it five, and still have been a winner." The jury returned a verdict for plaintilf, damages one penny. Notice of appeal was given.
