CRICKET
THE RECENT TEST MATCH. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright Sydney, December 22. The Herald says that at no stage did the Australians look like losing the test match. They have batted, bowled, and fielded better than the Englishmen in -recent years. English critics consider that the only way a visiting team can hope for success against Australia is l>y sound defensive, rather than brilliant, batting. The South Africans also adopted these tactics, but Australia has won nine out of the last eleven tests, proving that the enterprising batsmen, as represented by Australia, lose nothing by comparison. The Telegraph states that considering, the English team was not representative, and Warner was unable to play, it can lie congratulated on a good fight. If England is to win in Australia it must send the best team. It is open to argument if -even the best team could win. The Englishmen may do in the remaining matches. Many of them are young players in their first test match. This is more serious for Englishmen than for Australians, as cricket is sacred to the English. No sport is saor-ed to Australians, who have no traditions to live up to. LONDON PRESS VIEWS. Received 22, 10 p.m. London, December 22. Sporting Life attributes the defeat of the Englishmen to over-caution, and declares that Ilordern was the most formidable enemy.
Other papers credit Hordcrn with winning the match.
