APPOINTMENT OK Ml!. MOVFS. The High School Hoard yesterday afterno.ui to consider the appointment of a Micces-or to Mr. K. Pridham, as I'riiK-ijKi 1 of the school. There were 4!) applicants for the position. These were reduced to four, and finally to two—Ur. W. 11. Moves, M.A., B.Sc.. of Auckland, aiul Mr. i'. A. Broad, 8.A., X< Ison.
Mr. Moves received the appointment as Principal, and the following particulars of his career will no doubt be of interest:—He entered the Xilson College as a scholar-hip winner in ]SO,">. in which year he came top of the district. In 18H7 lie won a college scholarship; in 1S!)S-(11 lie was Prefect at Xi I»on College. and ill' l!Kll was licad boy. lie took his I!.A. degree in l'.K)2, and was demonstrator 1 in .physics and assistant in chemistry sit Carterton College in 10020.). In I !>(>4 he took his M.A. degree, and the following yiar obtained his B.Sc. degree. In 1900 he accepted the offer of a position as assistant master at Nelson College, and the, same year became science master at Timaru High School. In 1007 ho wis appointed second master at. Nelson College, and in 1010 accepted the. offer of the position of mathematical master at King's College. Auckland". During the past ten years he has had charge of junior scholarship, university.' matriculation and junior civil service' classes. In 1010, thirteen out of sixteen of'his pupils were successful in the matriculation examination. In I'.IO!) seven of his pupils passed the university examination in subjects in which hi' was responsible for hii-lruction. In his capacity as mathematical master at King's College, his work includes the teaching of ■the junior university scholarship and the matriculation classes, in addition to other subjects. lie had sole charge of the practical clashes as demonstrator of physics at Canterbury College. As a sport .Mr. Moves lias also been in the front rank, having won cups and shields for running for years in succession, and represented Canterbury in the New Zealand championships and New Zealand in the Australasian championships. Hf was a prize-winner at swimining.and in charge of that department at Nelson. As a cricketer he has been a club captain. In football he has been captain, manager and coach of teams, and is now vice-president of the Auckland I'niversitv College 'Club. Tn cadet, work lie has held the rank of captain, and been in charge of cadets on important, 'occasions, including the Duke of York's review at Christcliureh and Lord Kitchener's inspection at Wellington. He has also been intimately associated with I school magazines and debating clubs, having occupied the positions of editor I and manager. With the exception of the Timaru Miglv School position, for which he applied, he has been offered the various positions he has held without applying for them. With such credentials Mr. Moyes should be well qualified for the high position for which he has been chosen, and being only 33 years of age is an indication that he is a worker, and the. High School Board is fortunate in getting a Principal of so many attainments.
