(By "Moturoa.") With the appearance of acceptances for the Tarauaki Jockey Club's Christmas' meeting matters in the local racing world have .brightened up considerably. To hop off with, the Tarartaki Jockey Club has nothing to complain of in the matter of the responses made 'by owners, acceptances for all events with the exception of the Christmas Handicap being above expectations. Of the thirteen entered for the Welter, seven hold their ground. But five of the nineteen in the Stewards' Handicap have paid up. The Hurdle Race promises to provide excellent sport, ten of the original fifteen still remaining in. The Spy is the only defection from the 'Ladies' Parse, and Starboard is the only one missing from the Flying. As said before, the Christmas Handicap is the one weak spot in the programme. That th'e best stake of the meeting should only tempt a quartette appears at first sight very strange, but owners of good ten-furlong horses haw a plethora of good stakes to tempt them on Boxing Day, and the Taranaki Jockey Club cannot hope to compete with Auckland and Manawatu in this line. It would he a move in the right direction if the open handicaps were cut right out of the bill-of-fare, and the racing restricted to ha«ks only. The Hack Scurries and Huatoki Plate ha j ve drawn their usual crowd, and there are some fair performers in the five furlong events. Sportsmen "will ,be most disappointed at the withdrawal of Electrakoff. This horse has been a good winner in the past, and is deservedly popular with local Turf followers. Looking through the lists we notice the names of Epsom Lass, St. Toney, St. Bill, Smilax, Golden Loop' Patriotic, Plantation, Mortite, and other well known performers, and the talent engaged is sufficiently powerful to ensure an excellent meeting next week. If Epsom Lass sports silk in the Christmas Handicap punters will not be long in making a warm favorite. Silva has dropped in very lightly in the Hurdles, and on Feilding form should keep the top-weight on the rattle. T>-n^ r " ha»s the evergreen St. Bill and St. Gate looking in the pink of( condition, and the latter should score before many days. Although beaten at Warerley St. Gate can go some, and the i longer distances here may suit him better.

Mr. J Clay is bringing Euroto up to the mectmg This prad jumpg w 'll ° I not a PP t>ar to stay too well at present.

At the weights most people prefer Mastei Sjlma to Golden Loop i n the Flying. Ihe former u certainly the better seasoned horse of the two and ran really lately AUnsanui and at Woodville

Mendip u reported to be going well at Hawera and is a sum in the Panl 11 " P paSt fol ' m tho St - Paul Riding will hardly get to the end of o miles, .but there are shorter races at the meeting-and don't you f olget it . Mi. A. Jackson left Wanganui on Monw y "i . P ol ; omandel ' The .bay son of MensehiUfl has improved out of all knowledge, as his Feilding ami Woodville fomi prores, and should not return from Auckland without a stake. Equiitas, a well fancied Railway Handicap candidate, has 'been accepted for in no less than three races to be run at Elleishe on Tuesday. It is <illitl . t ni , e that the mares owner may have money to burn, but the people who keep the game going have a right to get a lead occasionlly when .big dolll) , b es IU . R at stake. ll,e daughter of Advance, after niling faronte right through for the Stewards Handicap at iUeearton, was bettois avu'c left m the mess that conies before fish. It i s all i u the game no doubt, .but -uch tactics don't score points for a popularity prize and never will Meanwhile tho question ef the hour isj

will Equitas start in the Railway Handi-1 cap? J Taking New Zealand Cup running as a { guide, it is not to foe wondered at that Miscount has most admirers for the Auckland Oup. Counterfeit is preferred to her stablemato, Masterpiece, and others mentioned freely are Miss Mischief, Domino and Los Angel'os. On iioxireg Day the sport af kings will be impoverishing punters at Ellersl'ie, Sew Plymouth, Thames, Awapuni, Porangahau, Ivaikoura, Petane, Taratahi, Cromwell, Dunedin, Reefton and Alexandra. And yet they say this racing abomination is being wiped out. This year's Great Northern Foal Stakes gives promise of providing a great contest. With Erinengarde and Winning | Way in the field the big argument as to which is the speedier of the pair bids j fair to be settled on Boxing Day. The Royal Stakes should foe another fine race. Martine lias .been brought up from Canterbury to contest the Manawatu Cup on Tuesday, and with 7st IMb in the saddle is sure to set a warm pace. The others, with the exception of Merrivonia, are not a high class lot. Hornet's Beauty, the crack English three-year-old, scored his fifteenth victory for the season at Newmarket just before tire last mail left. The locally-trained horses, Uhlando, Royal Arms and Crown Pearl will be racing at Ellerslie next week. Uhlando's Auckland Cup engagement has been persevered with, so Mr. H. Eva has not ; despaired: 'of the little deceiver's ability to come back to his form of 1908. J House owners and trainers should note ; that acceptances for the first day's j handicaps events at Stratford, and entries for the Borough Stakes, Farmers' Plate and Cardiff Stakes close' on Friday night at 9 p.m. Mr. J. R. Mackay is a I man who likes to be rushed! i
