m ALLEGED ASSAULT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hamilton, Tuesday. At Ohaupo last night two drainers, Hanlon and Marshall, both of whom were prohibited and fined at Hamilton Court yesterday for drunkenness, quarrelled over a matter in connection with the court case, when Hanlon, it is alleged, picked up a fern hook and struck his companion on the head,' inflicting a nasty wound six inches long. Marshall was conveyed to the hospital, and Hanlon arrested. UNION CANCELS REGISTRATION. Dunedin, Tuesday. The Otago Coalminerg Industrial Union by 250 votes to 115 daeided to withdraw from registration under the Arbitration Act. This decision affects Kaitangata, Green Island, Waironui, Alexandra, Mataura and Nightcaps. SIR JOSEPH WARD THANKED. Grsymouth, Tuesday. A meeting of the Inangahua County Council unanimously accorded Sir Joseph Ward a hearty vote of thanks for the untiring energy and zeal he had shown in the cause of the protection and defence of this Dominion. WHARF LABORERS' CLAIMS. Dunedin, Tuesday. About 15 representatives of the shipowners and stevedoring firms held a preliminary conference this morning in connection with the waterside worfders' dsmands. All the delegates from the various unions had not arrived, and the general conference between the men and tin? employers was postponed till tomorrow. CONCILIATION BOARD. Wanganui, Tuesday. Mr. P. Halley, Conciliation Commissioner, sat here to hear the claims of the Federated Boilermakers' Union. The whole of the claims, which had previously been inade an award of the court in Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington, were agreed to with slight alteration. An award will be sought for on the 'lines of the agreement arrived at to cover the country districts of Wellington. SWEET PEA SHOW. Palmerston N., Tuesday. The second National Sweet Pea Show opened to-day. The entries were a record, and the 'blooms superb, being the finest collection ever brought together in the Dominion. There were entries from Auckland and Wellington, besides intermediate centres. Judging commenced at noon. The Graphic Cup, for 18 bunches waved, distinct varieties, was won by C Trevethick (Lower liuttj, W. Strang (Palmerston) being second. A BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. Wellington, Tuesday. The Governor addressed an immense gathering of children at N«wtown Hall this morning. He spoke of the immense i social and educational advantages enjoyed by New Zuiland children compared with those of any other part of the world. A choir of three thousand children sang the National Anthem.
