The Union Company's new steamer Tahiti, which arrived at Wellington on Friday last, was formerly known as the Port Kingston. She was purchased for •£IOO,OOO (£60,000 less than the first cost of the Maheno) from the Imperial Direct West India Mail Service Co., Ltd., and up till that time was employed in the trade betwen Bristol and Jamaica. The Tahiti is a steel vessel of about 8000 tons, and has twin screws. Her dimensions are:—Length, 400 ft breadth, 55ft; depth, 24ft 4in. She is admirably adapted for trade through the tropical part of the Pacific, as most of the passenger accommodation is on the bridge deck, and the vessel *as engaged in passenger service to the West Indies, The Port Kingston was the largest boat in the service of her former owners, who were subsidised by the Imperial Government for the carirage of mails. The boats of this line were specially fitted up for conveying fruit. They were, in fact, expected to carry 20,000 bunches of bananas to Bristol each trip. It is expected that, with the advent of the Tahiti, the route from Sydney to Great Britain, via Wellington, Rarotonga, Tahiti and San Francisco will grow in popularity.
