The death is reported of ,thei Maharajah of Nepaul. Captain lAUman, formerly 'Government nautical adviser, and at one time captain of the Union Company's Penguin, died at Wellington last Thursday, aged 01 years. At NVlson College, J. Shaw, of New Plymouth, won the Hawke'a Bay Old Boys' special prize for general knowledge, and C. Quilliam won the Simmons prize for English literature. Mr. Wollaston. who was until recently Federal Inspector of Customs, is at present visiting this town. In 1860 his father (Rot. H. Newton Wolfaston) was Anglican minister at Bell Block, but left that year for Melbourne, as he could not spare the time to master the Maori language ill consequence, of lias duties being so great, The Hon. ITuia Onslow, a younger son of the late Lord Onslow, whose reception as a member of a Maori tribe at Otaki was such an interesting function when it took place, met with a rather ' serious accident in Switzerland which, it is understood, has resulted in spinal troubles, which will probably keep him bed-ridden for many months to come. Mr. Henry Hirst, of Orepuki, ex-M.P. for Waillace (1870), whose death was reported on Saturday was a pioneer colonist. He came to New Zealand in tho ship Agra, and shortly afterwards engaged in pastoral pursuits at Te Anau ami Maniapou'ri, where lie was one of the first settlerst Selling his' interest, he joined Captain Watts Russell, of Canterbury, in, exploring for about seven weeks for open country between the Waiau river awl Breaksea Sound. The voyage was made in an open boat, manned by a native crew, but the explorers did not succeed in their object. Mr. Hirst was the first to take a drove of cattle from the South to Gabriel's Gully in August, 1801. A few years later lie purchased a run at Orepuki, but on the discovery of gold in that locality in 1806 the land was resumed by the Government. In 1870 he successfully contested the Wallace constituency against Mr. J. P. Joyce, the sitting member. At the next election he was defeated by orro vote, but was I re-elected in 1884.
