DISTRICT NEWS.

MAKETAWA. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) The elections, eh? What d'ye think of it now? The strongest Oppositionist m the district never thought the result would puny out as it has, and those who "believed in the Government because of the good it had done, and would do, but who voted against it because they' believed in a strong Opposition"—well, by the tone of the conversation one hear* they're sorry. Oppositionist and Ministerialist alike are wondering what Taumarunui folk were thinking of to reject Mr Jennings, and one might well say both at that and the general result. The Labor man will come on top now, Mr. Cockey/and perhaps you w.H recognise later on how J.G.W. stood in your interest. However, old Father Time has a lot to say in such matters.

Mr. P. Breene, of the Agricultural Department, was busy innoculating calves on Monday last on Durham road, and a very large number of calves were put through. The road was divided into two sections, the one afc Mr. T. Conney'* taking those from Durham road east and Mountain road (210 were treated there), while the upper portion of the road, whi«h accounted for 333 calves, brought theirs to Mr. A. Dodunski's. Notwithstanding the rain which came on about starting time the settlers worked with a will to assist the Department representative. Tho total of 573 calves is the record for the road so far, and it is hoped this will be the last time calves will have to be treated. The weather still continues unfavorable for ploughing and planting, and. generally, things planted some time are not looking any too good. The stron« S.W. gales are just knocking the verv deuce out of the cows also; the grass feed is nothing compared with previous years at this time; and a radical change is needed, else winter time will tell a sorry tale.

At times one hears in the press quotations of what this one or that one has made, or what his cows are doing, etc., but the Inglewood district has been left in the cold. The big cheque man is always quoted from the Eltham or Kaponga district, and perhaps it will be of interest to know that our district is not quite as bad as it is painted, and also that decent cheques can be made round about here. Notwithstanding the very unfavorable season as regards weather, Mr. J. A. Bridgeman, of "Durham road, netted last month the very nice cheque of £7l odd, being the result of milking sixty cows, some of them being strippers. Mr. 8., who ia about the oldest settler on the road, and has had his time at the 4d a lb butter and the usual ups and downs of the pioneer, must feel gratified at being able to show that land in the Inglewood district can give good returns if properly managed. The teacher and pupils 'of Durham School have been busy for some time past preparing for the concert in connection with the braaking-up for Xmas holidays, at which prizes will be distributed. A nice programme of children's items, consisting of songs, dialogues, recitations and tableaux, will be presented, and as several adults have promised assistance a most enjoyable evening is anticipated. The affair will be held on Thursday next, and a dance is to follow.
