COOK ISLAND SENSATIONS.
TWO MURDER CHARGES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, December 15. A native ■woman was killed at Avaroa (Cook Islands) on Sunday, December 3. At the preliminary inquiry on Monday, a jury of four brought in a verdict that death was due to a gunshot wound, but that there was insufficient evidence to show by whom it was inflicted. The husband is held charged with the murder. Native feeling is acute, and firm and prompt measures are necessary. The relatives are much incensed against the man. The natives are quoting a previous ease, and desire direct British control of the Islands. The fatality is said to have been the result of drink, jealousy, and moving pictures of the cowboy type. Accidental shooting occurred at Mangaia, a boy being killed. At Raiatea a trial on a murder charge is proceeding. There are no details.
