MINING.

MILLS REWARD GOLD MINING COMPANY, LIMITED. The following' report has been received from the mine manager at Ooromandel:— The rise has been advanced upwards of 16ft. on Smith's reef for th.« fortnight, I making a total of 20ft. The reef has | been small for most of the distance, and lin conseqiuence has not been so gjood as \ it was in the drive 'below. This is [rather disappointing, as I laxpecfced to ' get good dirt going up, but at .the same . time it shows that the Teef is improving going down, and may be much better j below the present low level. A tap level crosscut has been put in 10ft,, and intersected the reef, and since cutting the ' reef a further distance of 18ft has been ' driven. The ore body averaged: for that distance two feet wide, underlying slightly to the east, and looks well. Colors of [ fine gold can, be seen in the; stone, and prospects cam be obtained right tihrough the reef, and they are improving as the drive proceeds south. The drive is n«axly far enough ahead to over whel% the rise comes up, and should connect within a fortnight, but in the meantime-1 will continue, the drive as long as the values last. When the rise is up there will be goodl ventitotion, and we will be able to work to better advantage in the low 'level
