Miss- Elsie E. Greatbatch is this year's dux of the New Plymouth High School. Mrs. James Grajit returned to New Plymouth from England on Thursday evening. Captain W. J. Newton has resigned his position as harbormaster. It is his intention to settle in' Auckland. A London cablegram announces the death of Mrs. Stannard, who, under the pen name of John Strange Winter, was a prolific writer of short stories.A Sydney cable reports the death of the Eev. Dr. Bruce, ex-Moderator of New Zealand and New South Wales Presbyterian churches, actat 87. Mr. It. Peppercll has been appointed secretary of the Okato and Puniho Cooperative Dairy Factory Co., Ltd. There 'were about ten applicants for the position. Messirs. Jas. Kibby and F. H. Jackson were elected unopposed as the ifirst representatives of the Fitzroy ward on the New Plymouth Borough Council. Both were members of the Fitzroy Town Board, the former having been chairman recently. The oversea representatives entertained 1 Sir Charles Lucas at luncheon on his ■retirement from the Colonial Office. Lord Strathcona presided, and amongst those present were Sir George Reid, Sir Wiffliam Hall-Jones, and all the Agents-General. At the breaking-up ceremony of the High School last evening, the headmaster (Mr. E. Pridhom, M.A.), who is severing his connection with the school shortly after 30 years' service, was the recipient of several presentations from scholars, past arnd present.
