It has been found necessary to remove the Mauretania's bottom plates amidships. The repairs will take eight weeks to complete. FESTIVAL OF EMPIRE. London, December 13. The Earl of Plymouth states that the Festival of Empire resulted in a heavy loss, and he would probably have to ask the public to subscribe £75,000 above the amount he paid for the Crystal Palace. CAUSE OF DEARNESS OF MEAT. New York, December 13. The president of the American Live Stock Association urges a Congressional investigation into the live stock and packing industries, alleging that retailers are making huge profits at the ex-' pense of consumers.
AMERICAN PRESIDENCY. New York, December 13. The Republican National Committee has disclosed itself as in favor of the candidature of Mr. Taft for the Presidency, and a meeting at Chicago is proproposed to formulate a programme.
TRAITORS SENTENCED. Berlin, December 13,
Schultz has been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for espionage, and the following sentences have been imposed on his companions: Hipisch twelve years, Wulf two years, Yon Maack and Mrs. Eckermann three vears.
