TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Labor Day has dropped out of the Auckland Cup. Weights for the Taranaki Christmas meeting are due about Tuesday. Mfirtin, who ran such a great race in the New Zealand Cup, 'will be ridden in the Manawatu Cup by R. W. King. . Sportsmen will regret the loss of a' staunch champion in Mr. Jennings, who was narrowly defeated for the Taumarunui electorate on Thursday. We have no cause for complaint as regards Mr Okey, who voted for the retention of the totalisator. Generally, sporting men have fared well at the polls, and our sport appears to be much safer now than, it has been for some years. The sporting vote is growing steadily, and with proper organisation will be a power to be reckoned with in 1914.
Lady Laddo, who won a hatful of the best for her owner, Mr. A. Wright, at eilding last week, was picked up a few months ago for £lO. She was at one time an inmate of the Porirua stable, but was thrown out on account of lameness. As long as she remains sound she should prove a good winner. Mr. John Cotter, who met his death recently in a motor accident, was a great sportsman m his time. Formerly & successful gentleman rider, he took to breeding on a small stale, and many good horses, including Jolly Friar, Jolly Roger, Great Scott and Jolly Maiden, carried his colors. He was at various times elected president of the JUanawatu and Ashhurst Racing Clubs. The other day, at a horse fair, a man approached the owner of a lean and hungry-looking steed, and after looking the latter over, said: "What's he worth?" "Ten pounds," was the reply. "It's the price I asked, not the weight," retorted the other.—Exchange. General Latour, whose defection from the. Auckland Cup acceptances caused remark, is going on the right way, and is to .be reserved for the G.N. Derby. Wee Olga was well supported the first day at '1 ukapuiia, but was bumped all over the course. Adair was unlucky at Feilding, and is expected to make up for it soon. Soidtline is galloping better than ever m India, and Aborigine is on the improve once more.
