The Licensing Poll.
NO CHANGE EFFECTED. BIG PROHIBITION VOTE. So far as they have come to hand the result of the licensing polls show that no change has been effected. Those districts that have hitjierto been wet will continue wet, and The dry districts will continue dry. Of the dry districts two only, viz., Aslibiirton and Ohinemuri, gave a majority in favor of restoration. All, however, favored national prohibition, which had a very large vote throughout the Dominion, though it failed to be carried by under 20,000 votes. From the summary of the live Taranaki results it will be seen that whereas no-license has only a majority of 700 over continuance, Dominion prohibition has a majority of 5443,ju5t within 50 votes of carrying it. The Taranaki electorate cast its vote in favor of Dominion prohibition, and gave a few over the three-fifths majority, as did Patea. Egraont gave a substantial majority. Stratford failed by a few votes, but Taumarunui, a good portion of which is already dry, never having had license, gave, only 50 over the bare majority. Details: d
Ohinemuri... 3,04!) 2,047 3,204 2,604 The figures for Waihi, the chief centre in Ohinemuri, were: Restoration 1033, No-License 1303. The last local option. vote was: Continuance 781, No-License 1888. AT THE SECOND BALLOTS. NO-LICENSE ATTITUDE. Wellington, Last Night. "A special meeting of the New Zealand Alliance is being held to-night to arrange for what Ave believe will be the final campaign," stated the Rev. John Dawson, secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, to a New Zealand Times reporter this afternoon. "We shall probably issue a manifesto in the morning." "You are starting early for the next election," suggested the newspaper man. "Oh, we are going to do our best to influence the second ballot fights," replied the Alliance secretary. "Our feeling is that the majority in favor of the' abolition of the traffic demands that next session of Parliament shall remove the handicap that is now placed upon the people. We are going to use all our powers to influence the second ballot, and seeing that the vote for national prohibition is so large, that is our reason for immediate action. While we were disappointed that no more electorates went for no-license, we feel very hopeful that we need only one more stride at. the same ratio of progress to emancipate this country from the liquor traffic." THE THREE-FIFTHS MAJORITY. NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE'S PROTEST. Wellington, Last Night. The New Zealand Alliance executive to-night resolved: "That in the opinion of the executive of the New Zealand" Alliance, the time has come for emphasising and enforcing the reiterated protests of the no-license party against the three-fifths majority required for the carrying of no-license and national prohibition as unjust, undemocratic and intolerable; that the executive reaffirm* the demand of the party for the application to all the issues of the bedrock democratic principle of majority rule, and that it considers that no candidate at the second ballot to be decided next week is deserving of the support of the party which polled more than 260,000 votes on Thursday who insists upon the retention of the oppressive handicap of the three-fifths majority.
