OUT GENERALLED BY A GIRL.
TELEPHONE OPERATOR CHECKS ROYALISTS. Lisbon, October 9. The Royalists have been driven from the field, and their plot to re-establish the Monarchy has completely failed. The swiftness with which the invasion was repelled was partly due to a. quick witted telephone girl at Vinhaes. The Government had received information that the Royalists on the frontier had arranged to enter Portugal on October 5, but kept the news to themselves, so that the rejoicings in Lisbon on the anniversary of the establishment of the Republic might not bo disturbed. A thousand Royalists under Captain Conceiro invaded Portugal, as had been decided, through the frontier in the Braganza district, and advanced toward Vinhaes, twenty miles from the town of Braganza. When they arrived at Vinhaes, a telephone girl rang up the authorities is Braganza, and before the loyalists were able to cut the wires succeeded in communicating the news. From Braganza another message was sent to Cliayes, where the Republican troops were at once ordered to march to Braganza to) reinforce the garrison there. I Thereupon the Royalist troops withdrew towards Vizielo, a small village where they camped. But they met with little success, and after one or two small encounters with the Republican troops they again disappeared over th« frontier. The Opposition parliamentary group led by Senhor Affonson Costa, had ofifened the Government its complete suppegrt m all measures intended to overthrow the plotters and to vote with the Government whatever money was required,
