AN ALLEGED SPY.
GERMAN OFFICER ARRESTED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, December 5. A German officer has been arrested as a spy at Portsmouth. London, Later. The German officer arrested at Portsmouth for espionage is Captain Heinrich Grossl. Evidence was given that he made elaborate enquiries concerning coal supplies, also as to the number of men in the barracks. The police discovered a cipher letter. Grossl was remanded and bail was not allowed. THE PRISONER'S EXPLANATION. Received fi. 11 p.m. London, December 0. Grossl. at the enquiry, stated that he wanted information for a book to enable German merchants to offer coal wherever there was a shortage. He told the commissioner that he would possibly send the latter to other seaports to complete enquiries.
