DISTRICT NEWS

WAREA. (Frlm Our Own Correspondents). The annual meeting of the Warea Public Library was held in the library room on Saturday night, there being a fair attendance. Mr. H. Pelham presided. The balance-sheet was read and showed a credit balance of £9 7s 9d. The election of officers resulted: —President, Mr. T. E. Larking; secretary, Miss F. Corbett; auditor, Mr. H. Pelham; committee, Messrs A. Ducker, T. E. Larking, C. W. Corbett, Mesdames A. Corbett and S. Corbett, Misses F. I Corbett and J. Cassie. It was decided to spend the credit balance on the purchase of new books. The annual meeting of the Athletic Club will be held shortly. A meeting of the Glenferrie Tennis CI ul) was held in the hall on Tuesday night, Mr. W. Revell presiding over a good attendance.,, The dance which was to have been held on December 5 has been postponed until a future date. Children's subscriptions under the age of 16 years will be fixed at 2s 6d.

Mr. W. J. ThorneH left on Friday morning for a holiday trip to Australia. A meeting was held in the hall on Tuesday night for the purpose of forming a tennis club on the Domain. Therewere about twenty present. Mr. W. Thornell was voted to the chair. It was proposed that a club be formed, to bo called the Warea Tennis Club. A. deputation, consisting of Messrs W. B. Smith, C. S. Muir, J. Keogh and W. Thornell was appointed to wait on the Domain Board for the purpose of ascertaining how much money the Board had in hand for fixing up the Recreation Grounds, and report to a future meeting. It was decided to ascertain the cost of asphalting, etc. The subscription was fixed at as for gentlemen and 2s 6d for ladies. A temporary court will bo arranged until something definite is done. A working bee was formed, consisting of Messrs H. Pierson, R. Julian, J. Barrett, J. Aylward, R. Warburton, D. Quickendon, "W. J. Thornell, C. S. Muir, J, Keogh, N. Orr and F. Pierson. It was decided to procure material for a start. A committee was formed consisting of Misses K. Aylward, L. Julian. T. Murphy, Messrs C. Muir and W. Thornell to choose racquets and balls. Mr. J. Keogh was appointed club secretary, Miss B. Aylward assistant secretary and Miss L. Julian treasurer. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting. The contractor has made a start on the new building at the back of the hall to be used as a wash-up room, with a copper fived in, and it will be completed in a day or two. The Glanferrie Tennis Club's grounds will soon be ready to start playing on. PUNIHO. At a meeting held recently a croquet club was formed, and a committee was formed to manage the affairs. The subscription was fixed at 2s 6d. The settlers of the district have received permission from the Education Board for taking out the raised floor from the school and putting down a level one. The floor will be completed this week. A dance will be held on Boxing Night in aid of funds for the cost of the alterations, and it cannot be other than a success, for a good working committee has been formed to carry out all arrangements. Mr. Andrew Lambie left here last week to start farming up North on his own. We will not have to wait much longer now before we will know the result of the elections. Wherever one goes now one is sure to fine two or three gathered together talking politics, and each one's man is going in for sure. A heavy thunderstorm passed over the district on Thursday evening . The lightning was very vivid and the rain simply fell down for a while. The milk supply at the creamery is still increasing, the largest supplier taking about 400,01bs daily. The tests run from 3.3 to 3.6, which are higher than they were a week or two back.

HURFORD ROAD. Everyone is heartily sick of the weather, so there is not much good in saying anything about it. On Friday night we held our annual school concert, and it proved a great success, several ladies and gentlemen journeying from Omata to help in the concert. All the school children's items were well received, reflecting credit on their teacher. About half-past ten the concert terminated. Then camo supper, and to see the children enjoying themselves was a pleasure, their faces all seeming to say, "This is where we come in!" But even children's appetites must have an ending, and when all were satisfied the floor was clear and dancing was indulged in until well after midnight, thus ending a pleasant evening spent by all. Mr. Forbes, one of the Opposition candidates, visited us on Saturday- night, and his meeting was well attended. After speaking for an hour on similar lines to those he used in the Theatre Royal at! New Plymouth the night before, ques- j tions were asked and answered. On the] motion of Mr. Chant a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker and to the chairman.
