At Portsmouth, Lady llall-Jones renamed the battleship New Zealand Zealandia. There was a large gathering of officers and New Zealanders. THE SANGER MURDER. London, December 3. At the inquest on Cooper, who was found dead on the railway line, after murdering Sanger, a former circus proprietor, whose servant he was, the verdict of the coroner's jury was that Cooper was insane. Evidence showed that an accusation of theft somo money had disappeared from Sanger's room—preyed on his mind. STRUGGLE WITH A PRISONER. Paris, December S. A prisoner in charge of a sergeant of gendarmes endeavored to escape from the Bordeaux express. He climbed from the window to the footboard. The sergeant followed, and a desperate struggle ended in both being thrown to the ground andi killed. MYSTERIOUS DLSAPPEAR ANCE. London, December 3. The Gazette recently announced the cancellation of Rev. F. P. Farrar's chaplaincies to the King and Queen Alexandra. Mrs. Farrar's brother, who has arrived from America, cannot trace the two Farrars since they left Sandringham rectory. AN AMERICAN'S SUICIDE. Paris, December 3. An American named Bishop, supposed to be a multi-millionaire, committed suicide with a revolver, as he was suffering from an incurable disease. FRENCH COURT MARTIAL. Paris, December 3. A court-martial at Lille condemned a trooper named Benzehoc to death for flinging his cap at the president of the court-martial. The man's motive was a desiro to share the imprisonment of a friend who was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for throwing a shoe at the surgeon in a penitentiary. AN AUSTRIAN GENERAL'S RETIREMENT. Vienna, December 3. A sensation has been caused by the retirement of General Holtzemlorff, chief of the General Staff, owing to differences with the Premier and Count Aehrenthal, Minister for Foreign Affairs. The General voiced tho demand by military men for war preparations on the Italian frontier. DESPERADOES AT BAY. New York', December 3. Two desperadoes held up and robbed a saloon in the town of Sedrowoolley, Washington State. A band of citizens pursued them, and, surrounding the robers, a fierce rifle battle raged for twenty minutes. One of the desperadoes surrendered. The other was fatally wounded. ■
