TURF TOPICS. (By " Moturoa.") Stratford nominations are due on Monday. X.ylnnd paid a handsome price in the Flying at Feilding. Koran is not a great jumper, but his great pace stood to him in the straight each (lay. Overtime was a warm order in Wanganui for tho Flying, but ran in the rear all the way. California, who has had a season at th. l slud, is to be put into training shortly. A lot of people who kept their hands, in their pockets the first day were put-' ting the notes in at top on Stevens in the Welter on Thursday, but the chestnut, though showing vastly improved form, could only run third. Taft ran two seconds at Feilding, and may have better luck at Woodville. I Naumai was the outsider in the Feild-1 ing Stakes, but he never gave his five opponents a look-in from tho word "go!" As expected, Recipe won a double in good style, returning his confident supporters two splendid dividends.
Wild Lupin ran well at Feilding, but docs not appear to stay well, and will probably never go further than five furlongs. Wild West won a six furlong race at Rosehill the other day in Imin. 14y.>sec., and carried the steadier of 10 stone. Coromandel was sent out a very warm order for the Iviwitea Welter on Wednesday, and ridden in front by A. 01liver landed the spoil very comfortably. . Before leaving homo Bellah was reported to be galloping in great style, but the brown colt left his best gallops on the tracks, and shaped very poorly at Feilding. , .
!The Carbine horse, Campfire, seems likely to make a name for himself, and , several of his progeny about here are I fine racy youngsters. Mr. H. Eva has one of them, lioynl Dragoon by name, and tlie colt is a picture just now. t'hlando could not get galloping in tho heavy going at Feilding, and the pare was so dreadfully slow in the big handicap on Wednesday that the stayers 1 had no chance. The veteran, Grand Slam, " looking Tery rough after a long spell, has been put into work again at Riccarton. Avarice is no good on a heavy course, as her running at Feilding proved. On a hard track she would probably have won one at least of the long-distance events. There were many cheerful faces on the course aftef Koran's victories, and our Wavcrley friends had the time of their lives at the meeting. _ Mendip was slipped over his favorite distance on Thursday, and won nicely, returning a surprisingly big dividend. On Trent ham and Riccarton form, the Hawera horse stood head and shoulders above tho opposition. A good word was spoken for Sanguinary, a three-year-old daughter of Sylvia Park, trained by F. Tilley. She'is not rearly yet, and ran moderately each day at Feilding, but will do better later on. After running second to Coromandel the first day, Brown Trout was solidly hacked for the Welter on Thursday, and got home comfortably in front of the outsider Awha after a good race. ' Master Sylvia had' the confidence of ' his party eacli day;- &ut the best he 1
could do was to run second to Rill in the I last race. The chestnut ran two good | races, and is worth following. ( Waiputerc landed the Rongotea Hurdles' after a good race with Silva, the latter paying a tall price for second. Jerry O'Connell was on the winner, and his penchant for close finishes makes punters very uneasy until the numbers are hoisted. He wowld make a race of it with the slowest nag ever started. It will be remembered that Euroco jumped the inside rails at Napier a few months ago. The same thing happened j on Thursday at Feilding, the horse com-1 ing a bad cropper this time when run-' ning well. Miscount is now a firm favorite for the Auckland Cup, and on Riccarton form the colt should run a good race. Cheddar is reported to be galloping brilliantly, and will be raced at Ellerslie this month. In Wanganui a lot of good money was lost over Overtime on Wednesday, and you couldn't get a match on Adare the second day. So much for these morals! Boanerges is spelling, and will not be taken up until after Cliristmas. Autumnus was slow to move in the Feilding Stakes, and did not negotiate the home turn to advantage. Hence | the failure of the Canterbury flier. J The filly by Campfire from Lady Men- j schikoff's dam, in Mr. L. Pascal's stable, j ran under the name of Lady Nolan at I Feilding. She was foaled .on the day Lord Nolan won the Melbourne Cup. Monoline got homo comfortably on Wednesday, and should go on winning a't the present weights. Pot Luck, an Auckland Railway Ifandicap candidate, is an' Australianbred horse by Ayr Laddie from Porti- , laeca, purchased by Mr. E. J. Watt in i ; Sydney recently. I Mr. J. R. McDonald's horses, Salopian. 1 Te Kahurangi, and Kina, are enjoying ■ j a short spell. ,; Cnllinan could not raise a gallop at I Feilding, and is evidently tired of the game.
