THE DUTY ON TIMBER. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, December 2. In introducing the tariff amendments, Mr. Tudor stated that beyond allowing the importation of New Zealand white pine of certain sizes free, there were no alterations in the' timber duties. He does, however,, raise the tariff on kauri.by the deletion of subitem B in item 303, which read: New Zealand pine, undressed, 6d per 100 superficial feet, and substituting an item dealing only with white pine for butter boxes. This throws other New Zealand pine into sub-item D (timber undressed, 2s Od per 100 feet). Merchants have raised the prices of New Zealand timbers other than white pine, V 2 in. a shilling per 1000 superficial feet, %in. and n /,in. Bd, lin. and over 2s.
