PERSONAL.
The Rev. Frank Hales, minister of the Baptist Church in Invercargill, arrived in town by the mail train last evening. Be is to spend two Sundays with the Baptist Church in New Plymouth. The Governor visited Oama.ru for the first tame yesterday, arriving from the south at 11.30 a.m. He was acorded a eivic ■welcome at the station, and presented' with an addTess. His Excellency was afterwards entertained at luncheon at the Town Hall by the Mayor, councillors, asd other citizens. In the afternoon he visited Waitaki High School sports, and last evening was the guest of Mr. John Reid, of Ellcrslie. A London cablegram reports the death of Mr. Justice Sir William Grantham, ait the age of 76 years. Justice Grantham s remarks to juries had on several occasions of late caused considerable indignation among those who did nok hold the same political views as he did. Rome years ago ho had an amusing quarrel with the County Council in the district where he lived. He made a. nobby or planning cottages for his tenants, and they were excellently built, but the builder had apparently to work from rough pencil sketches made by th« judge on odd bits of paper. The council made a. regulation that plans for new buildings, had to be sent in for approval, and,. not unreasonably, complained thai the judge s plans did not meet with their iequipments. The old gentleman howwer was obstinate, the case wa.s'taken to court and the council's demands for better plans was supported'.
