MILITARY PENSIONS.
To the Editor. Sir, —In considering the decision of the Government re the substituting of the military pension for veterans of the 1860 Maori war in lieu of the old age pension, to be subject to all the conditions of the latter pension, it does seem odd that if the services of the recipient of the military pension deserve that gift that the receipt by him of any monies from private sources or personal property during the lapse of the pension year should militate against or interfere with the amount of his military pension, and further necessitate enquiries as to his position, income, cost of living, and so on. Surely a military pensioner should not be otherwise than wholly absolved from such scrutiny. The verdict of the Government in power, as to the bestowal of the martial pension, is certainly not less than curt, stringent and indecisive.—l am, etc., C.W.W. Fitzroy, •23/11/11.
