Mr. Tudor sprung a surprise by presenting a long series of alterations of the tarilT. which operate from to-morrow. Many alterations are merely verbal or shift items from one category to another. British preference is granted in a number of instances, mostly at the expense of higher duties on foreign goods, and where duties are lowered it is mostly on articles required for manufacture. Tn timber, New Zealand white pine, for butter boxes, is made free instead of having a general duty of 6d per 100 superficial feet.
