An attempt on the part of Mr. Asquith to speak at the City Temple on the twenty-first anniversary of the Mansfield House settlement in Canning Town, led to extraordinary scenes. Hysterical females shouted, '"Votes for women!" and flung india rubber balls, wrapped in paper, at Mr. Asquith. Another chained herself to a central pillar and yelled war cries nntil gagged. Stewards ejected the disorderlies as fast as possible, and Mr. Asquith. having tried to secure a hearing for ten minutes, quitted the tan.
