ATROCIOUS SCENES.
THE ARABS AND ITALIANS. WHAT LED TO THE MASSACRES. By Cable—Press Annocation—Copyright, Received 30, 11.20 p.. London, November 30. English correspondents in Tripoli give details of the visit of Elhenni to the scene of Arab atrocities on October 23, and state that 28 Italians were found horribly mutilated, one wearing the Red 'Cross badge. Others were crucified and impaled on stakes. There was one case where the •eyeball was stitched through with
coarse palm string. Seven Bersaglieri were discovered with their burned heads above- the ground, and their hands cut off, their agonised expression justifying the presumption that they had been buried alive. There were many other atrocious cases. THE RECENT MASSACRES. LORD ROBERTS' VIEWS. London, November 29. Lord Boberts. replying to a correspondent, stated it was totally unfair to criticise the Italian Commander-in-Chief, without adequate information. No soldier would credit reports that women and children were deliberately killed. A desperate situation warranted desperate measures, and the severest were often the most humane. The innocent suffering -with the guilty was inevitable in war. CLOSING OF THE DARDANELLES. Paris, November 29. The Government is supporting Russia's pi otest against the closing of .the Dardanelles.
