The chief agitators were Americans, who did not act at any time under the British llag. The impositions of President Kruger were such as no Anplo-Saxon could stand for a single minute. Or. Jameson entered the reform movement against l lie wishes of others. Kruger played fal.-e towards the Reform Coniniittee. and gave the men to understand that if they pleaded guilty they would merely be fined; instead they were condemned to death. Secretary Olney's intervention alone saved the Reformers from execution within 24 hours.
