Mr. Frederick John Til Ten. & very old colonist, died at Waipukurau on Sunday last, aged 83 years. A London cablegram states that Mr. Justice Grantham is suffering from pnuemonia, and is in a critical condition. A London cablegram reports the (loath of Baron Gustave Rothschild, and of Mr. Alfred Holt, shipowner, of Liverpool. A New York cablegram reports the death from heart failure of Mr. Irvine B. Dudley. United States Ambassador to Brazil. Mr. Dryden, Chief Postmaster, last evening received a telegram from Mr. F. I), Holds worth, formerly chief postmaster at New Plymouth for 27 years, stating that Mrs. Holdsworth. who has been ailing fOil* some time, died at Auckland yesterday afternoon. A Wellington telegram states that Mr. IT. J. Brown, managing director of 'the British Kmpire Oilfields, arrived yesterday, on his way to visit the Taranaki oilfields. Air. Brown is accompanied by Mr. Carter, chairman of the Taranaki Petroleum Company.
A Dnnedin wire states that si special meeting of the Otago .Education Board held lust night for the purpose 'of appointing instructors in woodwork and agriculture. Two woodwork instructors we.re required ami 50 applications were reooived. Messes. A. Jackson (OamaruJ and Walter 0. Wakelin (Dunedin) were appointed. There were 2-1 applications for tiie position of instructors in agriculture, and those chosen were Percy S. Green (Xew South Wales) and Ernest J. Heafly (Pine Hill). News was received in Timaru Tester-! dfty of the death in Sydney .after an operation of Mr. James ilay, M.A., L.L.H., solicitor, of Timaru, who had 'been expected home next .Saturday from a trip to the Old Country. His ago was 50. He was a son of John Tlav. one of 'the pioneer Hays, who finallv settled oh a farm near Teimuka in 1800. Mr. James Hay was horn in C'hristchurch, He had a brilliant school and university career, being admitted to the Bar in 1883. was -t member of the University senate since ISO>S, became prominent at the Bar in connection with the Thomas Hall 'trials, and married in 1307 the daughter of the lute Mr. 11.
