STAR FOOTBALL CLUB.

PRESENTATION TO MR. L. HILL. There was a gathering of about 25 members of the Star Football Club last night for the dual purpose of bidding farewell to Mr. Les. Hill, a popular and prominent member of the senior fifteen, and also for the purpose* of presenting the, trophies annexed by the club last season. Mr. E. Doekrill, president of the club, referred to the regret felt by the Olub at the, departure of such an old and valued member as Mr. L. Hill, whose services had been appreciated by all the members. There was one consolation: lie was going to remain in the province, and so his services would still be available to the provincial team. He referred to Mr. Hill's lengthy connection with the Star Club, both as a playing member and also as secretary during the past two years. He also eulogised his signal success in the representative team, not only last season, but also in the match against Auckland the previous season-. He then, on behalf of the club, presented Mr. Hill with a handsome shaving companion, suitably inscribed, as a slight memento of the esteem in which he was held by the members, and also as some slight recognition of his enthusiasm and assistance. Mr. Elliott also endorsed the chairman's remarks.

Mr. Hill, in returning thanks, said that as a. schoolboy his ambition had always been to play for the Stars, though ho never dreamt he would ever bo good enough to play for the seniors. His relations witli the club had always been very pleasant. He also paid a tribute to the assistance he bad always, .received from Mr. E. Clark, the club's treasurer.

The president then presented Mr. Dewar, senior captain, with the Sole Cup, | which was won by the seniors in the Sat- I unlay competition, and Mr. Hopkins, jim.. captain, with t'he Carbine Shield, which the juniors hold this year. In doing so lie referred to the prowess and prestige {ruined liy the Star Club in former days, and hoped that this success was an augury that, the club would soon attain the high position that had in (he past {rained them so many admirers. The recipients returned thanks. Mr. Dewar strongly urged the members to stick together and train. A heartv vote, of thanks was accorded to Mr. Jub. Sole, the donor of the Cup, who for two years prior to the. Rugby Union controlling Saturday football, had practically fathered the Saturday compel itioii. The president was also warmly thanked for the interest he had always displayed in the club's welfare.
