Mr. H. F. Law, accountant at Itlie local branch of the Bank of Australasia, has received notice of promotion to the position of manager of the bank's Waverleybranch. An Invercargill -wire states that Sir John Kirk, of Ragged School fame, who arrived from Melbourne on Monday, was welcomed by the citizens of Invercargill yesterday. He goes, north on Thursday. A cable from Rome states that a secret consistory has confirmed the appointment of Cardinal Bourne and the other new Cardinals recently announced. The Pope has preconised (publicly confirmed) the appointments of Archbishop Delaney of Hobart, and Dr. Cleary, Bishop of Auckland. Mr. W. P. SncU, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Waitara, died at that town on Monday evening, aged 7G. Mr. Snell arrived in New Zealand from Devonshire in ISC3. After mining for a couple of years on the West Coast, he came to iaranaki, and was engaged in storekeeping at Pukearuhe for a few yeairs. On leaving there he went to Coromandel to the gold rush, but returned' to Taranaki in 1875, and resumed storekeeping at Bell Block, removing three years later to Waitara, where he remained in business until his retirement a year or.two ago. He was always keenly interested in local affairs, and was for some time chairman of the Raleigh (Waitara) Town Board and Waitara Harbor Board.
