EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL
ANNUAL MEETING. 'Die ami mil meeting of the Egmont County Council was held at Opunake on | Wednesday last, when there were present: Crs. Campbell, Hurst, Farquhar, Harvey, Dudley, Willcox and Davey. CHAIRMAN. On the motion of Or. Willcox, seconded by Cr. Harvey, Cr. Dudley was re-elect-ed chairman. Cr. Dudley, ion taking the chair, thanked the members for appointing him to the highest position in the Council. | He would conduct the business fairly and I ■impartially to the best of his ability. He would say one thing in conclusion, and that was that he hoped there would ■be no unpleasantness like at the final meeting of the last Council. They had got on well together till the last 'meeting. He hoped they would continue to work like brothers for the whole of the county, and not for any particular portion. He then welcomed Cr. Davey to the Council, and hoped that he would fall, in with the Councils antiquated methods and obey the ruling of the chair and not cause any disturbance. He was the only new member elected, and he felt sure Or. Davey would make a good member, as there was plenty of "»o" in him. °
Cr. Davey thanked the chairman for his remarks and said ho would, fall in with the Council's methods. When in Rome he would do as Rome did until lie had gained experience.
STEAM HAULERS. '•Foreman. Newport drew the Council's attentipn to the steam haulers that were travelling to and fro at his, end of .the riding under-the name of the Coastal Transport Company. They were what he called. :extraordinary heavv traffic. They were breaking' up the metal very badly in places and were very severe on most of the bridges. He (thought if 'they were allowed to run they would have a very bad time at his end of the riding, as he had used W nearly ail his maintenance metal. The machine itself weighed about four tons. When it was carrying water and coal and one trawler attached it would ■weigh an extra IScwt. The'vehicle carried about five tons of cheese, so that it would be about 10 tons, and that was far too much weight for these roads to carry, especially with the showery weather prevailing lately. •It was resolved that a copy'of the, letter be sent-to, the Taranaki County' •Counmil asking for. that Council's cooperation in dealing with the. extraordinary traffic and particulars, of the methods adopted thereto by that Council.
