He confessed to the crime in the presence of two ministers. The trial, which lasted for weeks,, excited enormous interest throughout the United States. The woman was shot in a motor-car, and Beattie asserted that she was killed bv an assassin, despite his struggle to save her. The gun used in the murder was found on the road, where it had been jolted out of the car. and was proved to belong to Beattie. '
