TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturai.") Feilding, races cm Wednesday. Taranaki nominations appear in another column. Iranui has, been retired. She won 30 times in 74 starts. They say that the Avarice-rDazzling double is a hot order for Feilding. . Floater is galloping well at Awapuni, and may show up shortly. The New Zealand jockey Jack McGregor broke his right arm when Don Q. fell with him at Flemingfcon. At Stratford, R. Sheehey is schooling St. Helena, a promising jumper. He also has Mavis in work. Euroeo and Overtime are the best track horses at Wanganui, and both appear to be cherry-ripe for forthcoming engagements. Recent gaming legislation has just about killed racing in the chief centres of the United States, and already some of the principal studs are on the move to 'Stralia. Avarice, who lias many admirers for her Feilding engagements, started in tha Oaks at Kiccarton. She made the pace for her stablemate, Counterfeit, and as she led' to the distance she must be endowed with a if air turn of speed. Clifford's horses have had a good run in the St. Andrew's Handicap at Feilding, and Sir George has a strong representative again this year. It is reported that Maxwell has been well supported for the Auckland Cup, and at present is ruling .favorite at a very short price. There will be a lot of "favorites" before the day. The Tara Steeplechase, won by Ilonnga recently, was a two mile cve'iut. The distance just suited the speedy Aucklander, who won very easily anil landed a big stake for his party.
J The horses lncy and My Lady have been sold to n southern sportsman, their Gisboroe owner having tired of racing. Tiio should do well at the small meetings in the south. Ronald Cameron's commission for winning the Melbourne Cup on Parisian amounted to £330, and it is said that he was laid ;CIOOO to nothing by the owner, so his "pay" totted up at 'the rate of £4OO a minute, or thereabouts—a royal win! True Shot has Ih>cil responsible for some promising track work lately and should run well at Feilding. W'llittaker will ride Domino in the Auckland Cup. Other engagements for the big raoe are: J. Conquest (VVaimangu) and L. Morris (Maxwell). Trainer H. C'utts should arrive at FeildiiiLg to-day with Avarice and Airtirmnus. The latter has unite Recovered from a kick received at the post for the Electric Handicap, and will set a merry pace in the Feilding stakes on Wedncs-
AH Red was awarded first prize in the thoroughbred class at the North Otago show,' and another Auckland Cup winner in the shape of Zimmerman was similarly honored at the recent Wanganui show. Black Northern, who is trained Fivately, put in an appearance at EUerelie on Tuesday morning and shaped splendidly in a turn over the "schooling hurdles. Two New Zealand trotters, Rawene and Coldstream Bells, contested the Richmond Thousand Trotting Handicap last week, but finished out" 1 of ft place. The winner, Delaivan Chimes, is by Abbey Bells, who also sired the third horse, Lively Bells. Fisticuff, who ran well at the Canterbury meeting, is to be tried over hurdles. The gelding is a fine big fellow and stays well. , The Auckland Cup candidates, BeMah and Sea Pink, are engaged in the principal events at Woodvile. Down south Miss Mischief and Domino have most friends for the Auckland Cup, and Peircne is favorite for the Railway Handicap. A northern paper states that great exception has been taken to Mr. Morse's Cup and Railway handicaps. It is. pointed put that Labor Day, a three-year-old filly, whose best winning performance was in carrying 7st 21b to victory in the Maiden Stakes at Riccarton, has been placed on the same mark, according to w.f.a., as Miscount, winner of the \Hawke's Bay Guineas, and runner-up in sevieral other big events this season. Furthermore, Labor Day is awarded 31bs over w.f.a., while King Soult (winner of the Avondale and G.N. Guineas and A.R.C. Summer Cup) is thrown in with 17'lhfs under -w.f.a. So much for Labor Day. With the exception of Miscount and Miss Mischief the Auckland horses sewn to havie all the better oi the weights, and not many southern horses will sport silk.at Ellerslie next month. An Australian horse engaged in the Auckland Cup is Sanskrit, winner of the South Australian Derby. He is let in lightly with 7st., but whether the horae mil'be brought over remains to be seen. Maxwell, a well fancied Auckland Cup candidate, must be accounted well in with Ost lOlbs. The brother to Soultline won the Autumn Handicap at Ellerslie in 2niin 36sec, carrying 6st 71b in the mile and a hailf race. Otherwise his form has been noth niarotg theßE.butnU MM kas been nothing to rave about.
