SEVERE HAILSTORM
IN NELSON DISTRICT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Nelson, Friday. ■Last night's storm of hail, rain, thunder, and lightning was the worst on record, but curiously partial. Within the city, and especially in the Toi Toi Valley, fruit trees and tomato plants were literally stripped of flowers and immature fruit, and all outdoor vegetables and plants of the cucumber tribe were ruined. The luiil covered the streets, and the eaves over six inches deep, and lay in drifts up to eighteen inches deep, which havp not yet incited ill many places, and some of the bills arc covered as with snow, while others' adjoining them show none. The rivers flooded 1 the ground floors of numerous dwellings and shops. At the nurses' quarters at the hospital the flood invaded all the rooms, and Waimea generally also suffered severely from hail, several greenhouses having most of the glass broken. The storm area seems to have been limited to the city, for it was not felt at Stake or Motueka, so the main orchards are safe. This morning is as cold as midwinter, with sleety rain.
