A Tokio telegram states that Baron Eomiira is dead. Tlie death is reported of Mr. John lon, of Kohi, Waver] ey, -aged SO years, an old settler. Sir Frederick Treves, the eminent British surgeon. will visit New Zealand and Australia in a few months time. He expects to spend about eight montlis in the colonies, and he will visit both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The death occurred last night at Hastings of Thomas Hamlin, 76 years, a native of Exeter. He served in the Maori war from 1 SCO—18(13. and took part in the engagements at Jlatarikorikn. Matahiwa. .Mnkoratuki, and others. For gallant conduct lie was presented with an inscribed revolver by the Xew Zealand Government.—Press wire.
