SIR JOHN FINDLAY AT PARNELL. ' By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland. Thursday. At a meeting addressed by Sir John Findlay in the Pai-nell Hall last night, Mr. R. Hill, solicitor, met <a motion of thanks and confidence by moving a vote of thanks. Mr. Hill, in reply to a question, admitted that he was not an elector of Parnell. Sir John Findlay said he would not object to such: an amendment being moved' by «n elector. Mr. Hill persisting, Sir John said: If you persist I shall deem it my duty to speak to vow iti a way you won't like. "And E shall deem it my duty to speak of, you in a way you won't like," retorted Mr. Hill,, excitedly. Sir J:blin, beckoned a constable, who escorted Mr. Hill outside the hall, the latter goinj," quietly, while there was a considerable; demonstration. The motion of tlianks and confidence was then carried.

A MEETING POSTPONED. Owing to the rough weather on Wednesday evening very few turned out to Mr. H. J- Okey's meeting at Westown. Tile meeting was accordingly postponed until a date to .be announced later. MR. McCLUGGAGE AT DOUGLAS. As. evidence of the keen interest being taken in the Stratford election, the Douglas Hall was well filled on Wednesday evening in spite of the frightful weather. Many ladies were among the and' ence to hear Mr. McCluggage deliver a:' address in support of his candidature. Mr. Yule was voted to the chair. In the course of an interesting speech, j Mr. McCluggage made special reference to the £250,000 expenditure yearly for four year.a on backblock roads, and j stated thai it was the fault of the local bodies that most of the money was not spent. He stated that it was a well known fact that the Stratford County, Whanigamomona County, the Ohura I County, and the Clifton County would not take the grants offered to them by the Government unless the Government, gave them 5 per cent, extra for administration costs, which was, the Roads Department explained, contrary to law.j The fault that this money was not spent lies, therefore, with the local bodies not the Government. At the con elusion of his address, the candidate was asked several questions, which he answered satisfactorily. A very hearty vote of thanks to him for his address was then pass>ed and confidence in him as a fit and proper person to represent this community in Parliament. An amendment was moved by Mr. Needham that a vote of thanks only be accorded ", to Mr. McCluggage and no confidence in the present Government. On the amendj nient being put to the audience it was ; lost, only three voting for it. The resoIlution was then carried with applause. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated I the meeting.—Contributed.

CANADIAN ELECTIONS AND NEW ZEALAND'S. To the Editor. Sir,—l see by the Canadian cables that the new Parliament in Canada has been, opened with "unprecedented splendor." Well, a.s the Opposition from one end,of New Zealand to the othe.r have given it out that they intend to do the same as the. Canadian people, I presume that if they got into power \ve should see the same extravagant waste on this kind of thing, instead of helping those who really need help. No, Sir, if the settlers, especially in the backblocks, know what they are up to thoy will stick to those they know and especially in this electorate, for a better member than Mr.! Jennings for looking after our wants could not be found.—l am, -etc.. WILLIE J. FREETH. TJrenui, November 21, 1911.
