«tal, broke away from the train at eep Hill quarry, and gathered speed .intil forty miles an hour was reached. The runaways were seen by the driver of an approaching passenger train, and he reversed his engine, but too late to prevent a collision. The force of the impact crashed the locomotive into the first carriage until the smokestack prevented its further progress. The carriages were fortunately empty. The fireman was severely and the driver slightly injured. The' passengers escaped, and raised a testimonial to the driver's presence of mind.
