MISSIONARY WORK.

SARAH TUCKER COLLEGE. The Sarah Tucker College, at Palmaeottah, South India, is conducted by the Church Missionary Society, for the purpose of educating Indian girls, and training teachers for native schools. In connection with the institution there is a college and secondary school for higher education, and also a training and model school where teachers are prepared for their work. There are thirty-five branch day schools in the district, at which two thousand girls receive instruction. The millions of India can only be educated by means of native teachers, and the girls at the college receive an excellent training under good religious influences. The work that can be done by those who leave the school both as teachers and later, when they marry, as most of them do, in their own homes is of inestimable value and deserves the hearty support of everyone interested in raising the masses of India from the ignorance and superstitution which is so general. The efficiency of the teaching in the college ! is most highly spoken of in the inspec- : tors' reports for last year, and many I of the former pupils are already doing ] excellent work. The field for pupils of the college is absolutely unlimited, and , it is to be regretted that lack of funds makes it impossible still further to extend the schools. The old and present pupils are very generous in their assistance, but the almost universal poverty of the people, though it makes their liberality the more admirable, renders it necessary to seek help from outside India, When it is mentioned that £5 a year will pay the salary of a mistress for Hindu children, that £2 is enough for a- scholarship for a year for home training, and that £lO to £ls will support a branch school for a year, it will be seen how great a work can be done for comparatively small sums. The bazaar to be held in the flood Templar Hall oh Wednesday and Thursday will give the people of New Plymouth a thame of doing something for their fellow subjects in Southern India, and it is hoped that many will avail themselves of the opportunity.
