FANNING ISLAND.
ROME INTERESTING DISCOVERIES. By Cable—Pre-s Association—Copyright. Sydney, November 21. Mr. Humphrey Berkeley, owner of Fanning Island, states that recent excavations have disclosed that it was inhabited by skilled races, lie has unearthed the remains of a large building 200 ft by 50ft. No mortar was used, the stones being Wrticed together. Near the building is a tomb containing a human skeleton with a necklace of the teeth of the cachalot and other articles, including a skull for poi eatinsr and a dog. Mr. Berkeley concludes that the island was one of the resting places nf the Polynesians in their numerous migrations in olden days.
