Ask yourselves the question: " How is the Revenue of this country to be made up if Prohibition is carried?" Have you ever studied the question from that point of view? Do you know the value of all the Imports to this country is £15,266,167 (exclusive of liquor) per annum, from which Duty to the amount of £2,021,043 is derived, or on a basis of 13 per cent., whilst on the other hand the value of liquor imported is £408,552, from which duty to the amount of £641,214 is derived, or on a basis of 156 per cent? The Prohibitionist will tell you that the four or five millions alleged to be spe/.t annuaky in drink will be spent in other directions. Yes! Possibly so, but it would be on a basis of 13 per cent., as compared with 156 per cent., so that the result will be eleven-twelfths less than what is already being received, or, in other words, £53,434 as against £641,214. But will this four or five millions be spent on what is productive of revenue ? A portion may be, but the greater portion will probably be spent on Sly Grog, Amusements, or some other non-revenue producing agency. On the present basis of taxation, the Imports to this country will have to increase immediately to 40 per cent., or, in other words, from £15,268,167 to £21,372,633 per annum. Do you, by any strength of imagination, consider the possibility of such an enormous increase if Prohibition is carried ? Or do you think those that; spend the four or five millions will make a voluntary donation to the Treasury to make up the deficiency, for it is certain the Prohibitionists will not ? The figures quoted are taken from the Official Year Book, 1910, and from a practical point of view as well as a safeguard against increased Taxation, you will admit the safest course to pursue at the forthcoming election is to Strike Out the Bottom Line on Each Paper, THUS I Vote Against National Prohibition.
