GENERAL TELEGRAMS

TIMARU WHARF LUMPERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Nigbt. The local representatives of the shipping companies have replied to the request of the wharf laborers for a conference on the proposed new agreement (which raises wages and frames new conditions) that they cannot confer on any agreement outside the Arbitration Act, as it would not be binding. Some of the proposed conditions are quite unworkable. Reference to the Act is an allusion to the fact that the union has cancelled its registration. ARCHDEACON HARPER. Timaru, Last Night. A meeting convened by the Mayor resolved to give a citizens' farewell and a purse to Archdeacon Harper, who, after 3d] years' here, leaves for England next month. The Ministers' Association will take part. The Archdeacon is popular with all ranks for his strong vein of patriotism.
